Experience Industry on the Career SnapShot Day!

A chance to visit the Port Kembla Steelworks and associated industries and experience what it’s like to work there and to find out if you want to be the new face of industry!

What is Career SnapShot?

A program designed to help school students make some decisions around technical careers, including apprenticeships and degree cadetships in the industries associated with and surrounding the steel industry at Port Kembla.

The Program involves a one-day experience on site, where students will have the opportunity to see industry in action and speak to the people who work there. The experience will include:-

• A plant tour

• Short talk by current apprentices and cadets

• Short talk by industry partners concerning careers

• Short talk by senior employees who began as apprentices/ cadets

• Tours of relevant work areas, including training shops and/or laboratories

• Advice on how to pursue a technical career within the associated industries

Who for?

Students interested in pursuing a trade or a degree in Engineering or Science. Careers are available the following disciplines; Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Environmental, Computing, Materials or Chemistry. Check out the Subject Picker.


You will need to organise a visit through your School’s Career Advisor - they can call the Visitor Centre on 02 42757023.

Cost is $7 per high school student (accompanying teachers free of charge)


To ensure your safety the following conditions apply;

  • Minimum age 10 years.
  • All visitors must wear suitable clothing - long trousers or slacks and flat heeled fully enclosed shoes.
  • Photography is not permitted whilst inside the Steelworks.
  • Due to staircase access, the tour may not suit people with mobility problems.
  • Smoking and the carrying of cigarette lighters are not permitted.
  • Visitors with a heart pacemaking device may be restricted from certain areas.
AIW is a working industrial area.
Tours may be altered to meet process or safety requirements.

All tours start and finish at the AIW Visitor Centre.
